Radio station given green light to hit the airwaves... for a month
Source: Chris Story, News and Star - Published 14 Sept 05A NEW Carlisle radio station will hit the airwaves on November 7 after clearing a licensing hurdle. Broadcasting watchdog Ofcom have contacted those behind Cityvibe FM stating their transmission application has been approved. They are now trying to secure a frequency.
Station secretary Ellen Spencer hopes to receive a letter soon confirming the licence details. With the final licensing agreements now being tied-up, Cityvibe plan to concentrate on setting up their studio, equipment and making sure presenters are prepared to broadcast. Among those who will host shows, from a yet to be disclosed location, are former CFM DJs Ken White and Mike Charlton.
Sponsorship deals are being struck and interviews lined-up with leading figures, organisations and charities in the city. Ellen said confirmation of the licence had “boosted morale”. She added: “Everybody is really happy about it.”
The licence will mean Cityvibe can broadcast for 28 days. After that, they hope to apply for a community licence, which are slowly becoming available across the country. But if one does not become available within six months they plan to make another bid for a short-term permit.
Ellen believes community-based Cityvibe will offer something different. She said: “We will be different to CFM and BBC Radio Cumbria. It is a different ball game. We are never going to be as big as them and we’re not trying to be.”
Ofcom confirmed to the News & Star that Cityvibe FM, which will be non-profit making with any money raised going towards its running costs, will be able to broadcast, subject to them being assigned a radio frequency.
They added that there did not appear to be any problems with their application.
